AL.ARTE selecteert vijf beeldende kunstenaars die werken met oa beeld, video, geluid, tekst of performance. AL.ARTE onderzoekt samen met hen ieder op geheel eigen wijze het begrip “stedelijke identiteit” en de daaraan gebonden maatschappelijke relevante kwesties en concepten als perceptie, samenleving, cultuur, persoonlijkheid, gender, nationaliteit en de zoektocht naar de ander in jezelf. Het thema identiteit krijgt altijd veel maatschappelijke aandacht. Het raakt aan de kern van het thema inclusiviteit: erkenning van de eigenheid van ieder individu, respect en ontmoeting. Het raakt ook aan uitsluiting, ongemakkelijkheid en ontkenning.

Stedelijke identiteit is geen etiket dat je ergens op kunt plakken, het ontstaat langzaam en bepaalt uiteindelijk  het gezicht van een plek of stad.

Het resultaat van het creatief proces uit zich in een tentoonstelling “ANA NESH”.  ANA is het Arabische “Ik” en NESH het Tamazight voor “Ik”. Deze expositie heeft tot doel nieuwe stemmen te introduceren en bij te dragen aan de nieuwe culturele verbeelding rond het thema IDENTITEIT. Door jonge en opkomende kunstenaars te presenteren en te empoweren, wil AL.ARTE bijdragen aan hun professionalisering. Vijf beeldende kunstenaars bieden bijzondere creatieve antwoorden op hoe identiteit hedendaags wordt gedefinieerd.

While Western Pop Art began in the 1950s and was popularized in the 1960s, several  artists from the MENA region & diaspora today continue to keep it alive through their colorful and kitsch aesthetic works. Stunning and exciting cross-cultural designs abound, driven by the influence of globalization on a local, already visually rich culture, as well as the present social and political situation. A new generation of designers is defying all clichés about the ‘Arab & African world’. These designers’ creative exuberance is often cutting-edge and groundbreaking. In a culture this visual, local tradition combined with the influence of globalization constitutes a blend that’s a more than sufficient source of inspiration. A clash of civilizations is definitely out of the question here. On the contrary, a hybrid, graphical mix is manifest.

For a new exhibition in Antwerp (Belgium) we are looking for digital pop art & collage artists from North Africa, the Middle East & diaspora.
